The common striped woodlouse (Philoscia muscorum) is a widespread and active woodlouse species native to the UK. It is a small to medium-sized isopod, reaching about 8–11 mm in length, and is easily recognised by its shiny, smooth body and distinctive longitudinal stripes running down its back. Colouration varies from grey-brown to yellowish, often with a metallic sheen.

Unlike some slower-moving woodlice, Philoscia muscorum is fast and agile, frequently seen scurrying through leaf litter or across damp soil. It prefers moist habitats such as woodland floors, gardens, and hedgerows, where it feeds on decaying plant material. This species plays a key role in breaking down organic matter, contributing to soil health and nutrient cycling in many terrestrial ecosystems.

Isopods are crustaceans making them an excellent source of calcium for amphibians and reptiles.
