skirted isopods (Oniscus asellus)

This native isopod also known as the common woodlouse, is a widespread species in the UK. It is one of the largest and most familiar woodlice, typically growing up to 16 mm long. Its body is oval, flattened, and edged with broad, rounded plates that resemble a “skirt.” The exoskeleton is smooth and usually dark grey or brown, often with a slight sheen.

Oniscus asellus is commonly found in damp, shaded environments such as under logs, stones, and leaf litter, where it feeds on decaying plant matter and helps recycle nutrients in the soil. It plays an important ecological role in woodland and garden habitats and is active year-round in moist conditions.

Isopods are crustaceans making them an excellent source of calcium for amphibians and reptiles.
