the aquatic juvenile stage of dragonflies, commonly found in ponds, lakes, canals, and wetlands throughout the UK. They live underwater for one to five years, depending on the species, feeding on small aquatic insects, invertebrates, tadpoles and small fish, Equipped with a specialised extendable lower jaw, they are effective predators. Before becoming adults, nymphs climb out of the water and shed their final skin, emerging as the colourful flying dragonflies seen during the summer months.
